It was Oklahoma's enactment of a state income tax in the late 1930's that led directly to the founding of Cox & Smith 61 years ago.

As a result of the new tax, many prominent Oklahoma oil and gas families and independent oil companies decided to leave Oklahoma for Texas. As the story goes, John Cox was persuaded by his friend and partner-to-be, Lamar Seeligson, to organize Seeligson, Cox and Patterson to represent this independent oil fraternity, and in 1939 what is now Cox & Smith Incorporated came into being.

A year later, the firm was on its way to becoming one of the leading oil and gas law firms in South Texas and had begun to diversify its practice to serve the needs of a growing client base. Today, Cox & Smith, one of the largest law firms in San Antonio, is a full-service business and commercial litigation firm with over 75 lawyers.
